How to Build and Hang a Projector Screen
Today we’re going to make magic together in the form of a 144 inch projector screen. It’s the screen that we’ve always dreamed of, but we never had the guts to make. Well, today’s the day! The mainframe is 124 and a half inches by 76 and 5/8 of an inch. I’ll be using the Kreg jig to join my boards together. I set my jig to three-quarter inch material and two pocket holes on each joint. It should do the trick!
If you don’t have the Kreg jig, you can get the baby Kreg jig. It’s only $20 and you get the same results with just a little bit extra effort. Line the end of the baby Kreg jig up with the end of your board, clamp it down, and that’s it! Prop the joints up using some of your off cuts and this will help square up our joints. I’m using a right angle clamp to hold the joint together while I’m first screwing. It’s not necessary, it just makes things easier.
Make your way around the remainder of the frame using an inch and a quarter pocket screws and clamps. Next up is the center supports and I set them 39 inches off of each inside edge. I use my combination square to square up the joint and then attach it using an inch and quarter pocket screws on each end.
Next I’m going to center it on my wall and figure out where I’m going to put the cleat. The cleat will be made out of one piece of one by four cut at a 45 degree angle. One of those sides will go into the wall, the other side will go into the back of the frame, but first I need to determine where I’m going to put my cleat. And as you can see, I have an access panel on the wall that I need to dodge.
Setting my table saw to 45 degrees, and I’m making my cut right along the center of the one leg. Now because of that access panel, I need to prop my cleat up to one by fours and plus one piece of plywood. I think that will do the trick.
Now I have to start quantifying everything using my level. Once I centered my frame on the wall, I determined where I needed to be to fall back the frame. Now it’s crucial that your cleat is square, so double check your measurements and use a combination or speed square to make sure it’s square.
Use your indoor house vacuum to vacuum up the wood shavings (don’t tell Rachel), and throw on some wood glue and attach the cleat to the frame. I don’t always use wood glue over top of carpet, and I did today. I’m using a countersink bit which basically just means a bit that’s larger than the head of the screw. This way the head of the school sits slightly below the surface of the cleat.
Creepy locate where the studs are, and we’re going to transfer that to our cleat. I’m using this Forstner bit to countersink it and a slightly smaller drill bit to pre-drill my holes. Set your drill to drill mode, insert your slightly smaller bit, and pre-drill as far as you can through the cleat into the wall. Remove your drill bit and insert your ratchet, kick it into low gear, and get the bolt started in your cleat. And drive it into the stud. Repeat the process on the other side, while checking for level.
The beauty of this cleat is that I can slide it into position as needed, so here I’m about a quarter of an inch to a half of an inch off. That’s no big deal, it’s still going to hold it, and it’s still really strong. I’m going to add some L-brackets to each of the joints just for some added stability.
Once putting my frame up on the cleat, I realized that my wall is not actually flat or straight, so I need some spacers. So I’ll use 2 by 4’s, a 1 by 4, and some 5 millimeter rule on and made a couple spacers. It’s not pretty, but it will get the job done. And on the far end, I had to use a little mini cleat spacer to pull the frame into the wall.
That was going to be such a cool shot. Totally blew it.
