The 2021 Apple TV 4K was released just over a month ago and, overall, it’s a great update to the product. One of the biggest changes is the switch from HDMI 2.0 to HDMI 2.1, which means the Apple TV 4K is now future-proof for any high frame rate content. There’s also the addition of a power port and ethernet port, if you’re not using Wi-Fi. Oh, and Wi-Fi has been upgraded on this model too – it now supports Wi-Fi 6.
So, what does all of this mean? Essentially, the new Apple TV 4K is now capable of more bandwidth while streaming. Both the old and new model support Dolby Digital and Dolby Digital Plus 7.1, have a 4K resolution, Dolby Vision and HDR10. However, the biggest spec difference is the 60 frames per second on the gen 1 versus the 120 frames per second capability on the gen 2. This will support any high frame rate HDR content.
I have tried to get the Red Bull app to work so I can actually load some content in that kind of speed but unfortunately I could not get that to work, so I’ve not been able to test it out yet. Another change on the new model is the price – it’s now $179, down from $199 for the previous generation.
Overall, the 2021 Apple TV 4K is a great update and well worth the price difference if you’re looking for a future-proof streaming device.
