Hello everyone this is Chris from projector screens info calm in this video I’m going to Chemistry or to see how to make your own 120-inch ALR projector screen for only about twenty dollars so let’s get started firstly what is ALR for those who don’t know ALR is an acronym for ambient light rejection and essentially what that means is the material that we’re going to be using in this video is designed to reject ambient light so it’s ideal for daytime viewing even in relatively bright living rooms and it’s going to do a great job of improving the contrast ratio of your image so let’s get started with what you’re going to need for this project so firstly you’re going to need some black out fabric I’m actually using blackout curtain fabric which is available pretty much anywhere online or in brick-and-mortar fabric stores and it’s actually really affordable I got this particular fabric for only around eight dollars per meter so it’s a really good option if you’re looking to keep costs down the next thing you’re going to need is some clear adhesive vinyl I’m using clear self adhesive vinyl from eBay which is again really affordable at only around 15 $US for a one-meter long by one-meter wide sheet you could actually use a slightly cheaper alternative which is frosted adhesive vinyl but I actually prefer the clear option because it tends to hold a little bit better to the fabric and it also tends to blend in a little bit better with the ALR fabric once it’s applied next you’ll need a pair of scissors some measuring tape some adhesive spray and finally some black gaffer tape so with all of the materials that you need gathered it’s time to get started on the project so the first thing we’re going to do is measure and cut our blackout fabric so I’m measuring 120 inches in width and 88 inches in height so I’ve cut my fabric to those dimensions and with the fabric now cut we’re going to spray one side of it with adhesive spray I’m actually using 3m super 77 adhesive spray and I would highly recommend that you use this product or something similar because it’s designed to work with vinyl and it gives you a really strong tack which is essential for getting the vinyl to stick properly to the fabric so with the adhesive spray now applied we’re ready to apply the vinyl to the fabric and I’m actually using a little bit of painters tape just to keep the vinyl from sticking to my workspace as I apply it so I’m actually going to cut the vinyl slightly larger than the fabric and I’m giving myself about an inch of leeway on all sides as I slowly peel back the backing paper from the vinyl and I start to apply it to the adhesive side of the fabric it’s really important that you take your time and apply the vinyl as smoothly as possible to avoid any air bubbles which could potentially ruin the finish of your screen so there you have it that’s how you make your own 120-inch ALR projector screen the total cost of this project is only around twenty dollars and it only takes a few minutes to put together so if you’re looking for an affordable solution to getting a great image in your home theater I would highly recommend that you give this a try thanks for watching and make sure to keep an eye out for more videos coming soon

guys oh my gosh so sorry for magically disappearing for the past-ish week I was on vacation in Utah visiting my family and I just got back yesterday and I’m so excited to be finally filming a new video for this channel so sit back relax this is gonna be a long one I’m going to be covering everything from the cost of my 120 inch alr projector screen to how to make it so if you’re interested in either of those two things then please stay tuned alright so my new projector is the Epson 5050 UB this is an amazing projector I highly recommend that you go and check it out online there’s tons of reviews for it it’s definitely a high-quality 4k projector I’ve had it now for over a year and a half in fact and I absolutely love it however one thing that projector definitely lacks a lot of people complained about it is the the throw ratio so if you don’t know what that is the throw ratio is pretty much how far back you can place your projector from the screen in order to get a certain image size and if you want a very large image size like over 100 inches or me 120 inches then you’re definitely gonna have to place your projector very very close to the screen and that’s not always the best look for a home theater so for me personally I wanted to create an ambient light rejecting screen so that I could place my projector far enough away from the screen to where it wouldn’t be as noticeable however that created a whole nother bunch of issues and dilemmas so I know there’s tons of people out there who have the same projector that I have who are struggling with the same issues so I’m gonna break down in this video pretty much everything that I had to go through in order to create my ambient light rejecting 120 inch projector screen so that gives you a pretty good idea of kind of the budget that you’re gonna have to spend overall in order to be able to pull this off same with the tools that you’re gonna need and same with how much patience you’re going to need so the first thing that you’re gonna need is a frame and this is pretty self-explanatory you want to get a frame that is wide enough to be able to hold your ambient light rejecting fabric and to grip it enough to where your fabric does not sag in the middle or anything like that what I ended up coming up with for the frame material was some two by two’s from home depot and I believe I ended up spending around maybe $23 total on all of my wood so it was a very very cheap wood frame as you can see I’ve kind of scaled it down in here so that it would fit nice and snug inside of my camera and my tripod also so that I can show you guys exactly what I used but yeah everything to put this together probably cost me around $30 now one thing that you’ll have to keep in mind with ambient light rejecting fabric is that it is very very delicate so you have to avoid using anything sharp on it so basically you want to try to avoid using any nails or anything like that you definitely want to use some sort of a stapler in order to be able to attach it to the frame so that you don’t actually puncture the fabric and make a big hole in it also you want to avoid exposing your fabric to any sunlight whatsoever so if you live in a household where there is a lot of sunlight or if you have a lot of skylights then I definitely wouldn’t recommend that you do this overseas for me being in the northwest completely eliminated that issue for me there’s very very little sunlight or natural light for the most part here so I didn’t have to worry about that too much but if you want to be on the safer side over like I had so many complications and problems with my ambient light rejecting fabric that I ended up having to buy like five different light rejecting fabrics just so that I can finally get it to a place where I was happy with it so pretty much every time something went wrong I would just have to reorder fabric so that I could start all over then I also used velcro dots in order to attach my fabric to the frame so that was another thing that I spent money on I spent a lot of money on those I ended up using around 250 velcro dots in order to get everything to where I wanted it and then after a while they started to fall off so you might want to consider a more permanent adhesive of some sort so yeah pretty much everything that I used to put this frame together this entire frame which is a 120 inch frame ended up costing me around between 40 and 50 dollars once again that includes the wood the fabric the spray adhesive the velcro dots everything so for me I was okay with paying for everything but for a lot of people that might be too much money to spend on just a frame so if you want to kind of cut down on cost you can definitely try and look for stuff that you already have around your house
