In our age of big, wide screen, high definition television sets, most
people who want to have a home theater setup are opting to get one of the
largest of these sets, and mount it on the wall to maximize space. Gone are
the days of bulky projectors in a darkened room. There are big advantages
to this new style, to be sure. Especially in the days before DVDs, the
projectors of old produced an image far inferior to what you could see on a
movie screen, they took up a lot of space, and the room had to be darkened.
But with a modern plasma TV showing a Blu-Ray disc or high definition
programming you get an awesome image under most lighting conditions,
without the bulk. However, for a lover of the movie theater experience,
projection still has the big pluses of an exceptionally large image, and
that “this is a movie, not TV” feeling you can only get with an image
projected onto a screen. This is why, if you are a movie lover, you should
buy a HD projector.
HD projectors do require a darkened room like the home theaters of old. But
unlike them, they are far less bulky, and produce a far better image. As
long as you get a good quality, bright projector, good speakers, and a good
screen, this is as close as you will ever get to the experience of watching
a film in a movie theater.
The price of a good front projection home theater setup is not as expensive
as you might think. A good 1080p projector (don’t get a 1080i or 720p
projector) costs around $1500, while a good set of speakers costs about
three hundred and a good screen also costs around three hundred. Don’t
scrimp on the speakers or the screen in an attempt to save money. Bad sound
is often the weak link in a home theater, while projecting onto a white
wall or a sheet makes for a much darker image.
Among the best 1080p projectors are the Panasonic AE4000, the Mitsubishi
HC3800, and the Vivitek H1080FD. The Panasonic is a bit pricey at around
$2000, but the picture is superb and it’s very full-featured, with an easy
to use menu system. Limitations include that it is not as bright or easy to
focus as some models. The Mitsubishi model is almost as good and costs $500
less, while the Vivitek is one of the best that cost under under $1000.
When you see a Blu-Ray movie projected with any of these models, you’ll
understand why you should buy a HD projector!
