Projector Screen Fabric – Get the Right Projection Screen Material – 7 Essential Tips

Choosing the right projector screen fabric is absolutely essential if you
are creating your own DIY projector screen. There are some things you need
choosing projector screen material and below are eight essential tips:

If ambient light is a problem go with a darker screen. A grey screen reflects less light from both the projector and from ambient
light. It will require more power from the projector to get the same level
of brightness. If you are worried about ambient light at all the typical
matte white, or pearlescent coloring commonly used in movie screen fabric
is probably not the best way to go.

If you want a roll-up portable projection screen that stays flat go with
textile-backed vinyl. It can be tough to keep other types of screens flat, textile-backed vinyl
is projection screen material most commonly used in commercial screens and
maintains its planarity. I would not recommend textile-backed vinyl for a
diy projection screen that will be in a fixed position as it is
considerably more expensive.

Never touch a seamless paper screen. Much like a viewing area created with projector screen paint, it is very
easy to ruin a seamless paper projector screen. If you decide to use this
projection screen material keep the screen out of reach. Definitely do not
want something like this in reach of the kids.

Rubberized canvas is good for outdoor screens. This material is probably best suited for outdoor screens, it is durable
and certain types can be found on sites like eBay rather cheaply that
provide good gain. There are different types available if picture is
important be sure you go with one that specifically mentions it can be used
as a projection screen.

For a better picture add a black border. Adding a black border out of a material that will absorb light such as
velvet can enhance the appearance of the picture. Do not go with a
reflective material for the black border or you could even make the picture
worse. Even the most haphazardly created cheap projector screens can be
greatly enhanced with this tip.

Make sure the size adheres to a 16:9 ratio for an HD Projector. Having a large amount of space above or below the picture make sure that
you have adequate material so your screen can adhere to a 16:9 ratio with a
HD projector. For a normal definition projector go with a 4:3 ratio.

Get more fabric than you need. You will not want to join multiple pieces of fabric together so make sure
that the fabric that you do get is bigger than what you need to create your
screen. It is better to spend a few dollars more up front than to waste all
your money.
